Service Advisory
TL;DR:
I recently moved into a new house and my new ISP (Quantum Fiber) equipment/line delivery is not performing as expected.
Services may be slow or briefly inconsistent.
Sometime between Sunday (3/1) and Monday (3/2), I will take the connection down briefly to test an ONT-bypass approach.
What Changed
The new location is Quantum Fiber 8Gb service delivered over XGS-PON.
They installed a Q1000K (SmartNID/ONT + gateway) and a Wi-Fi pod.
Right now, I’m seeing about ~3Gbps average throughput (instead of expected multi-gig performance) and
intermittent disconnects, which makes services feel slow and inconsistent.
Likely Root Cause (High Level)
This does not appear to be an internal Lightmedia infrastructure issue (compute/storage/switching/routing are healthy).
The symptoms point to the provider handoff layer (how the optical line is being terminated and presented to Ethernet),
plus downstream negotiation/cabling considerations on the multi-gig path.
Planned Fix: ONT Bypass Test
To remove the ISP-supplied ONT/gateway as a variable, I’m testing a direct termination method using an SFP+ ONU module.
This can eliminate an extra translation layer and may stabilize the link while restoring full throughput.
XGSPON ONU Stick SFP+ (Version 8311)
MAC Optical Transceiver (ONU SFP+)
SMF 9.953G-TX / 9.953G-RX
1270nm TX / 1577nm RX
Compatible: Ubiquiti / MikroTik / Netgate / TP-Link / 10G switches & routers
What this should improve:
- More consistent multi-gig throughput
- Reduced disconnects / session drops
- Cleaner diagnostics and monitoring
- Less reliance on ISP device behavior
Expected Impact (3/1–3/2)
During the maintenance window, you may notice:
- Short interruptions while the optical handoff is reconfigured
- Routing resets during validation
- Temporary service restarts
Once complete, this should resolve the current “half speed + instability” behavior.
No action is required on your end. If you see issues outside the 3/1–3/2 window, reply to this message and include the time it occurred.
